Bojong Nangka Floods: Urgent Need for Improved Infrastructure and Awareness

Heavy rainfall on May 9, 2025, caused serious flooding in many areas of Tangerang Regency, including Bojong Nangka Village. The flood hit houses and public structures, and some of the residents were forced to move to safer areas. The Government of Tangerang Regency responded quickly by delivering relief and making arrangements for the construction of a retention basin as a remedy.

Bojong Nangka flash floods helped bring home the urgency of increased infrastructure and environmental awareness. The administration moved swiftly on the flood issue, providing aid to uprooted residents and outlining proposals to construct a retention basin that would prevent such incidences in the future. Early mobilization of resources helped mute the flood's immediate impact and see to the distribution of needed commodities to respective recipients. However, although the response was quick, Bojong Nangka's centuries-old drainage system remains a very serious issue. One resident of the area pointed out, "Di Bojong Nangka ini sering banget banjir kalo hujan deras, karena penyumbatan saluran airnya ga lancar." Besides that, there has also been an absence of public awareness of waste management that led to drainage systems being clogged, making the flood situation worse.

The government's proposed retention basin gives a long-term green solution for flood control. Additionally, the incident can be the starting point to implement education interventions aimed at bringing people's awareness about proper garbage disposal and environmental conservation to prevent any repeats of such accidents in the future. With increased intensity and frequency in rainfall due to global warming, however, the likelihood of flooding still occurring in the area remains high. Recurrent flooding can also destroy infrastructure and disrupt the day-to-day activities of inhabitants, posing a long-term issue for disaster management in Bojong Nangka.

With these in mind, the government is encouraged to accelerate the development of infrastructure, particularly the drainage system, alongside the initiation of education programs for waste management and disaster preparedness. With maximum effort, Bojong Nangka can enhance its preparedness to counter upcoming flooding.
