When Smoke Fills the Morning: A Call for Environmental Awareness

Thick smoke filled the air in a quiet housing complex on the morning of April 26, 2025, after a resident was found burning household waste in their yard. The incident triggered discomfort among neighbors, especially since local regulations clearly prohibit burning trash within the neighborhood.

"I woke up earlier than usual because the smoke was so strong it entered my house," said one resident who lives close to the location. "It wasn’t just disturbing, it made me think about how much people still ignore environmental rules."

The neighborhood’s RT (community leader), Mr. H. Rahmat, had previously reminded residents not to burn trash due to its health and environmental risks. “Burning trash isn’t just disruptive to your neighbors, but it’s also harmful to our health. We’ve agreed to keep this neighborhood clean and healthy without damaging it ourselves,” he said during a community meeting.

Ironically, the area already employs a regular waste collector, making the act of burning garbage unnecessary. The presence of such a service was meant to encourage proper waste disposal, but this latest incident shows that awareness remains an issue.

Some residents are now considering launching small educational campaigns, such as neighborhood discussions, to prevent similar events in the future.

Although the smoke eventually faded, the impact on health and social harmony may linger longer. The incident has served as a reminder that protecting the environment is not just a shared rule, but a shared responsibility.
